60 quick resolutions to get your new year off to a great start

I love the New Year for the same reason I love Mondays – heck, even mornings: They all offer a chance to start fresh with a blank slate.

I know there are plenty of people who turn their noses up at New Year’s resolutions. They prefer “goals” because “resolutions” doesn’t sound serious enough. Like only dilettantes do resolutions.

If that’s the case, then I’m the queen of the dilettantes because I love New Year’s Resolutions. Just like goals for the serious-minded, they give me something to strive for.

Of course, resolutions only work if you do. If that makes you groan because you already have enough work on your plate, I offer these 60 easy resolutions that you can knock out in a week — or even less, if you’re motivated.

New Year’s resolutions that are easy to do

  1. Smile. Every day.
  2. Give someone a sincere compliment.
  3. Say “no” to something you don’t want.
  4. Say “yes” to something new.
  5. Laugh.
  6. Look yourself in the eye and say, “I love you.” Repeat until you mean it.
  7. Ask for help when you need it.
  8. Help someone else.
  9. Tell a goofy joke.
  10. Pick it up and put it away.
  11. Call someone you love.
  12. Cherish this moment.
  13. Look at the bright side.
  14. Learn something new.
  15. Forgive yourself.
  16. Review what went right that day each night before you fall asleep.
  17. Play.
  18. Take a road trip, even if it’s just to the next town.
  19. Indulge in something truly decadent.
  20. Be kind.
  21. Remember why you started.
  22. Accept responsibility.
  23. Tell yourself, “I can do this.”
  24. Love yourself.
  25. Take action.
  26. Take care of you: You can’t pour from an empty cup.
  27. Speak up.
  28. Appreciate everything that happens to you.
  29. Ask for something you want.
  30. Avoid users.
  31. Ignore gossip – and gossipers.
  32. Change your attitude.
  33. Break a rule.
  34. Make things better.

  37. Do something different.
  38. Be open to what comes next.
  39. Be proud of who you are.
  40. Believe in yourself.

  43. Stop bullying yourself.

  45. Celebrate. Anything.
  46. Challenge one negative opinion of yourself.
  47. Go someplace you’ve never been before.
  48. Change your mind.
  49. Stop lying to yourself.
  50. Use your imagination.
  51. Listen.
  52. Don’t give up your power to anyone.
  53. Make time for what’s important to you.
  54. Move forward.
  55. Introduce yourself.
  56. Do it now.
  57. Turn off your cell phone.
  58. Open yourself.
  59. Give yourself credit.
  60. Take a social media break.
